I often respond to things people have heard and read about the church and I find it interesting that almost always it is from sources that aren't even members of my church. I always suggest, as with everything else in life, that if they want to know the truth that they should go to the source. I invite everyone who's ever wondered about the church to watch the BYU channel today (Sunday April 5th) from 9-11 and again from 1-2 and listen to people we consider to be prophets. They give comforting council to guide us in these difficult times. Dish Network channel 980 and Direct TV channel 374 (I think those are the right channels). If you miss it you can always visit LDS.org and click on "General Conference".

Mormon Temples

Are Mormons Christians?

As Elder Ballard noted earlier in this session, various crosscurrents of our times have brought increasing public attention to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Lord told the ancients this latter-day work would be “a marvellous work and a wonder,”1 and it is. But even as we invite one and all to examine closely the marvel of it, there is one thing we would not like anyone to wonder about—that is whether or not we are “Christians.”
By and large any controversy in this matter has swirled around two doctrinal issues—our view of the Godhead and our belief in the principle of continuing revelation leading to an open scriptural canon. In addressing this we do not need to be apologists for our faith, but we would like not to be misunderstood. So with a desire to increase understanding and unequivocally declare our Christianity, I speak today on the first of those two doctrinal issues just mentioned.

Our first and foremost article of faith in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.”2 We believe these three divine persons constituting a single Godhead are united in purpose, in manner, in testimony, in mission. We believe Them to be filled with the same godly sense of mercy and love, justice and grace, patience, forgiveness, and redemption. I think it is accurate to say we believe They are one in every significant and eternal aspect imaginable except believing Them to be three persons combined in one substance, a Trinitarian notion never set forth in the scriptures because it is not true.

Indeed no less a source than the stalwart Harper’s Bible Dictionary records that “the formal doctrine of the Trinity as it was defined by the great church councils of the fourth and fifth centuries is not to be found in the [New Testament].”3

So any criticism that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not hold the contemporary Christian view of God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost is not a comment about our commitment to Christ but rather a recognition (accurate, I might add) that our view of the Godhead breaks with post–New Testament Christian history and returns to the doctrine taught by Jesus Himself. Now, a word about that post–New Testament history might be helpful.

In the year A.D. 325 the Roman emperor Constantine convened the Council of Nicaea to address—among other things—the growing issue of God’s alleged “trinity in unity.” What emerged from the heated contentions of churchmen, philosophers, and ecclesiastical dignitaries came to be known (after another 125 years and three more major councils)4 as the Nicene Creed, with later reformulations such as the Athanasian Creed. These various evolutions and iterations of creeds—and others to come over the centuries—declared the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost to be abstract, absolute, transcendent, immanent, consubstantial, coeternal, and unknowable, without body, parts, or passions and dwelling outside space and time. In such creeds all three members are separate persons, but they are a single being, the oft-noted “mystery of the trinity.” They are three distinct persons, yet not three Gods but one. All three persons are incomprehensible, yet it is one God who is incomprehensible.

We agree with our critics on at least that point—that such a formulation for divinity is truly incomprehensible. With such a confusing definition of God being imposed upon the church, little wonder that a fourth-century monk cried out, “Woe is me! They have taken my God away from me, . . . and I know not whom to adore or to address.”5 How are we to trust, love, worship, to say nothing of strive to be like, One who is incomprehensible and unknowable? What of Jesus’s prayer to His Father in Heaven that “this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent”?6

It is not our purpose to demean any person’s belief nor the doctrine of any religion. We extend to all the same respect for their doctrine that we are asking for ours. (That, too, is an article of our faith.) But if one says we are not Christians because we do not hold a fourth- or fifth-century view of the Godhead, then what of those first Christian Saints, many of whom were eyewitnesses of the living Christ, who did not hold such a view either?7

We declare it is self-evident from the scriptures that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are separate persons, three divine beings, noting such unequivocal illustrations as the Savior’s great Intercessory Prayer just mentioned, His baptism at the hands of John, the experience on the Mount of Transfiguration, and the martyrdom of Stephen—to name just four.

With these New Testament sources and more8 ringing in our ears, it may be redundant to ask what Jesus meant when He said, “The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do.”9 On another occasion He said, “I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”10 Of His antagonists He said, “[They have] . . . seen and hated both me and my Father.”11 And there is, of course, that always deferential subordination to His Father that had Jesus say, “Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.”12 “My father is greater than I.”13

To whom was Jesus pleading so fervently all those years, including in such anguished cries as “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me”14 and “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me”?15 To acknowledge the scriptural evidence that otherwise perfectly united members of the Godhead are nevertheless separate and distinct beings is not to be guilty of polytheism; it is, rather, part of the great revelation Jesus came to deliver concerning the nature of divine beings. Perhaps the Apostle Paul said it best: “Christ Jesus . . . being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.”16

A related reason The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is excluded from the Christian category by some is because we believe, as did the ancient prophets and apostles, in an embodied—but certainly glorified—God.17 To those who criticize this scripturally based belief, I ask at least rhetorically: If the idea of an embodied God is repugnant, why are the central doctrines and singularly most distinguishing characteristics of all Christianity the Incarnation, the Atonement, and the physical Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ? If having a body is not only not needed but not desirable by Deity, why did the Redeemer of mankind redeem His body, redeeming it from the grasp of death and the grave, guaranteeing it would never again be separated from His spirit in time or eternity?18 Any who dismiss the concept of an embodied God dismiss both the mortal and the resurrected Christ. No one claiming to be a true Christian will want to do that.

Now, to anyone within the sound of my voice who has wondered regarding our Christianity, I bear this witness. I testify that Jesus Christ is the literal, living Son of our literal, living God. This Jesus is our Savior and Redeemer who, under the guidance of the Father, was the Creator of heaven and earth and all things that in them are. I bear witness that He was born of a virgin mother, that in His lifetime He performed mighty miracles observed by legions of His disciples and by His enemies as well. I testify that He had power over death because He was divine but that He willingly subjected Himself to death for our sake because for a period of time He was also mortal. I declare that in His willing submission to death He took upon Himself the sins of the world, paying an infinite price for every sorrow and sickness, every heartache and unhappiness from Adam to the end of the world. In doing so He conquered both the grave physically and hell spiritually and set the human family free. I bear witness that He was literally resurrected from the tomb and, after ascending to His Father to complete the process of that Resurrection, He appeared, repeatedly, to hundreds of disciples in the Old World and in the New. I know He is the Holy One of Israel, the Messiah who will one day come again in final glory, to reign on earth as Lord of lords and King of kings. I know that there is no other name given under heaven whereby a man can be saved and that only by relying wholly upon His merits, mercy, and everlasting grace19 can we gain eternal life.

My additional testimony regarding this resplendent doctrine is that in preparation for His millennial latter-day reign, Jesus has already come, more than once, in embodied majestic glory. In the spring of 1820, a 14-year-old boy, confused by many of these very doctrines that still confuse much of Christendom, went into a grove of trees to pray. In answer to that earnest prayer offered at such a tender age, the Father and the Son appeared as embodied, glorified beings to the boy prophet Joseph Smith. That day marked the beginning of the return of the true, New Testament gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and the restoration of other prophetic truths offered from Adam down to the present day.

I testify that my witness of these things is true and that the heavens are open to all who seek the same confirmation. Through the Holy Spirit of Truth, may we all know “the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom [He has] sent.”20 Then may we live Their teachings and be true Christians in deed, as well as in word, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

........and now we can get on with our lives.

Yesterday was the last day in the fight for Proposition 8. I sat in front of a polling place with my Yellow Yes on 8 sign. There were quite a few "No on 8" people there as well, they had signs and cars decked out with "NO, No, NO!" they were even stopping voters getting in line and handing them literature, which is illegal. I told them that if they didn't stop handing it out I would report them, they didn't and I did and.........no one did anything about it. It was yet another example of the dishonest tactics of the "no on 8" campaign. Misleading adds, stolen yard signs, and disregard for voting laws. This "do anything to win" mentality, I find so repulsive. Fortunately, It looks like we've won this battle. I'll admit that this whole thing has really gotten to me, especially this last week. I've been very irritable and possibly even a little rude in my conversations with the other side. Fortunately, when the clock hit 8pm last night, I turned to all the "no on 8" people and said, "Have a good evening", they responded with the same and we all went home. It was a nice way to end a really emotional and down right bitter campaign. We respected each other and wished each other well.

Regardless of the final voting results, I quote from Genesis 2:24 - Therefore shall a aman leave his bfather and his mother, and shall ccleave unto his dwife: and they shall be eone flesh.

Marriage is sacred.

Another Stollen Sign

Well, it's still a few more days until the election and I'm already at five prop 8 signs stolen from my house. I thought I would post some of the words of the President Thomas S. Monson, President of the church. He said:

"Let us make our homes sanctuaries of righteousness, places of prayer, and abodes of love that we might merit the blessings that can come only from our Heavenly Father. We need His guidance in our daily lives."......

"This is our one and only chance at mortal life—here and now. The longer we live, the greater is our realization that it is brief. Opportunities come, and then they are gone. I believe that among the greatest lessons we are to learn in this short sojourn upon the earth are lessons that help us distinguish between what is important and what is not. I plead with you not to let those most important things pass you by as you plan for that illusive and non-existent future when you will have time to do all that you want to do. Instead, find joy in the journey—now."......

"If you are still in the process of raising children, be aware that the tiny fingerprints that show up on almost every newly cleaned surface, the toys scattered about the house, the piles and piles of laundry to be tackled will disappear all too soon and that you will—to your surprise—miss them profoundly".......

"Stresses in our lives come regardless of our circumstances. We must deal with them the best we can. But we should not let them get in the way of what is most important—and what is most important almost always involves the people around us. Often we assume that they must know how much we love them. But we should never assume; we should let them know. Wrote William Shakespeare, “They do not love that do not show their love.”3 We will never regret the kind words spoken or the affection shown. Rather, our regrets will come if such things are omitted from our relationships with those who mean the most to us."......

"I bear witness to you that this work is true, that our Savior lives, and that He guides and directs His Church here upon the earth. I bid you farewell, my dear brothers and sisters, until we meet again in six months. In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, our Savior, our Redeemer whom we serve, amen."

A thought for today

“No other success can compensate for failure in the home.”
- President David O. The question was from the book of Moroni 10th chapter 4th verse that reads;

"And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Ghost."

This is a very important scripture that explains how anyone can know if the Book of Mormon is true. My friends question was "Why are we supposed to ask if it is "not" true, why not just ask if it's true. To answer this question I will refer to a talk given by Elder Gene R. Cook (A leader in the Mormon Church) he said

"One way to understand verse 4 [Moro. 10:4] is to note that the scripture does not say we are to ask whether these things are true or not, but that we are to ask “if these things are not true.” What is the difference?

The Lord does not ask us to prove that the teachings we have read are true, or that they are not true. That is the kind of objective approach one might take in the academic, scientific world. However, that is not the best way we learn truth from the Lord.

The Lord offers us the opportunity to let him confirm truth already in our hearts. But in order to confirm religious truth, one must at least have the idea, or the thought, or the belief (however small) that he has found something true, and then pray to receive the Lord’s confirmation.

Verse 4 [Moro. 10:4], then, is the Lord’s invitation, through Moroni, to thus confirm truth. To ask “if these things are not true” implies a degree of acceptance that comes as a result of our pondering the teachings of the Book of Mormon that we have received. Notice again the importance of that very first step—remembering the mercy of God to us since the Creation—and then the next step, which is to similarly ponder and receive the teachings of the Book of Mormon. Surely such pondering of these teachings will bring to mind their truth, their power, their goodness. Thus, it is now tantamount to praying, “Father, I believe that I have received truth. Please tell me if this is not so.” This kind of humble petition is motivated by our faith in Christ, by our faith that he will let us know whether our feelings are correct concerning the Book of Mormon or whether we have been deceived. Thus, our prayer, in essence, is a request for a confirmation of our own conclusions from our pondering. The Lord may not respond exactly how and when we expect, but still our obedience to these conditions qualifies us to receive an answer; this is the scope of the process described in these verses.

In fact, in D&C 9:8–9, the Lord tells us even more about receiving this confirmation of truth:

“But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.”
“But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong.”

So thats how the Lord answers prayers. Many times we have to do a little work work before we'll get an answer. We have to study it out first and make up our minds and then the Lord will confirm it, or tells us its wrong.

An Interesting Email

I'm back! from a long much needed vacation. An interesting email was sent to me while I was away. It was an email from someone from "no on 8" basically telling me that my job is on the line by supporting prop 8. The records of anyone who donates money to either side of a proposition can be viewed by the general public. Someone saw that I contributed some money and thought they would try and scare me into withdrawing my support. Is it too much to ask people to just be fair in a political process? If I choose to support an effort that I feel is important than that is my business. You don't see me sending threatening emails to people who are against prop 8, do you? Well, it is a heated issue and I suppose I can understand if someone gets upset but the email was very inappropriate. This is probably to perfect time to share a great scripture from the book of Mathew in the bible:

"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;"

I don't hate whoever sent me that email, your probably very passionate about this subject (as I am). I hope, however, that from here on out we can all act a little bit more like adults.

Bolt Is Done!

For the last eight months I've been at Disney working on a movie called Bolt. The sweet part, of course, is that I am going on vacation for two weeks! I'm not checking email or updating my blogs until I get back........I'm not even going to look at a computer. It simply states that "only marriage between a man and a woman is recognized in California". I support this proposition. I'm sure my position will not be popular in the eyes of many people so I'd like to take a minute and explain why I am in support of protecting marriage.

Here are some of the major consequences if this amendment fails:

1. Children in public schools will be taught that both traditional marriage and same-sex marriage are okay.

The California Education Code already requires that health education classes instruct children about marriage. (§51890)

Therefore, if the definition of marriage is changed, children will be taught that marriage is a relation between any two adults. There will be serious clashes between the secular school system and the right of parents to teach their children their own values and beliefs.

2. Churches will be sued if they refuse to allow same-sex marriage ceremonies in their religious buildings that are open to the public. Ask whether your pastor, priest, minister, bishop, or rabbi is ready to perform such marriages in your chapels and sanctuaries.

3. Religious adoption agencies will be challenged by government agencies to give up their long-held right to place children only in homes with both a mother and a father. Catholic Charities in Boston has already closed its doors because of the legalization of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.

4. Religions that sponsor private schools and which provide housing for married students will be required to provide housing for same-sex couples, even if it runs counter to church doctrine, or lose tax exemptions and benefits.

5. Ministers who preach against same-sex marriages will be sued for hate speech and could be fined by the government. It has already happened in Canada, one of six countries that have legalized gay marriage.

6. It will cost you money. A change in the definition of marriage will bring a cascade of lawsuits. States that do not allow same sex marriage will be required to recognize the marriages that are performed in California, thus leading to some very expensive lawsuits that the taxpayers will be funding. Even if courts eventually find in favor of a defender of traditional marriage (highly improbable given today’s activist judges), think of the money – your money, your church contributions – that will have to be spent on legal fees.

7. This opens a door for anyone to be married. How do we tell polygamists that it is illegal to marry if they are consenting parties? What about victims of incest? Or any other kind of marriage that is not traditional? Once this line is redrawn, it will just have to keep moving.

So there it is. I invite everyone to study these issues and vote yes on Prop 8

Mormons and Beards

A friend a work told me, the other day, that he watched some "documentary" on PBS that talked about how Mormons are not allowed to have facial hair. While there are certain situations in the church where you must be clean shaven, Mormons can (see above picture) certainly grow beards. Missionaries of the church, and students at BYU are asked to shave because wherever they go they are in one way or another directly representing the church and are therefore asked to adhere to a certain dress code of being clean and clean shaven. Personally, I hate this beard and don't know why anyone would grow one anyway......but many Mormons do.

First words from the Mormon Animator

Ok, so I'm an animator working at Disney who just so happens to also be a Mormon. let me give you the quick answers to some of the common questions I get about Mormons.

1) Do Mormons have multiple wife's? NO, our church discontinued that practice well over a hundred years ago. I only have one wife. All Mormon's only have one wife..........and the jokes are really getting old.

2) Why don't Mormons drink alcohol or coffee? Coffee's just really not that good for you anyway, and drinking alcohol more often then not seems to get people in all kinds of trouble but I suppose the real answer is because we believe God told us not to. Besides, think of all the hang overs I'm avoiding......ha.......ha,ha.........ha.

3) Why are we called Mormons? "Mormons" is actually just a nick name. People call us that because we use the Bible and a book called the Book of Mormon. The Bible is the writings of Prophets from ancient Isreal. The Book of Mormon is the writings of Prophets in the ancient americas. We consider both to be scripture. (Ezek 37:16,19 talks about it)

4) Are Mormons Christians? Yes. Our church name is the church of "Jesus Christ" of latter-day saints. We believe in the Bible and we believe that Jesus was the literal Son of God. There are some Christian religions out there that claim we are not Christians because we do not believe the trinitarian idea of three God's in one. We believe that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are three different personages but with one unified purpose. Here is a great link that explains why we think that:
http://lds.org/conference/talk/display/0,5232,23-1-775-15,00.html

5) Who is this Joesph Smith guy? God called prophets anciently to teach people the gospel. Shortly after the crucifixion of Christ the prophets were eventually all killed off and the fullness of the gospel was lost. The Bible talks about this in 2 Thesselonians 2:3. Joseph Smith was called by God in our day (around 1820) to be a Prophet and to restore the gospel that was lost. We don't worship Joseph Smith just like we don't worship Moses or Abraham. Prophets in all ages teach people God's plan.

6) Why would anyone want to be a Mormon? This was a funny thing someone asked me at work. I figured I would answer it with my top two reasons.
1 - We believe that a man and a woman can be married for eternity, not just "until death do you part". Its a beautiful doctrine only found in the Mormon faith.
2- We believe in continuing revelation, Meaning, that God speaks in our day just as he spoke in ancient times. That there are living prophets on the earth today to help guide us away from the moral slime that is Hollywood.

I'll be honest, being a Mormon is not the easiest thing to do. No Alcohol, no smokes, no premarital sex (how's that for a shocker) But the things that mean the most, that bring the most fulfillment in life are never easy. Let me say that for whatever reason, a lot of crazy things are being said about Mormons. I just encourage everyone to check the source, www.lds.org is a good one if you have any questions or just ask me.
